It’s no secret that if you’re using Instagram, you may be getting frustrated with the relentless updates and algorithm changes.
Just like many others, you have most likely witnessed a massive drop in your engagement and marketing results over the past year, and at this stage, it seems that Instagram is only continuing to become a more difficult platform to achieve true organic reach.
The pain of Instagram is that as soon as you start paying to play – or using Instagram Advertising – you will start to see a decline in your organic reach also.
The platform wants you to advertise.
However, if you are not ready for that financial commitment in your business, you may want to keep reading to find out a few ways you can ensure that your account will survive and thrive on Instagram in 2018 and beyond.
1. Focus on Quality Content over Quantity.
In the past, businesses would struggle to keep up with their Instagram activity due to the sheer amount of content they needed to produce to execute their marketing strategy.
However, now as the Instagram algorithm changes, content from as old as 48 to 72 hours is now showing up in the timeline of followers, you can really pull back on content creation and simply focus on creating the best quality possible.
Perhaps this means investing in a photographer or videographer or simply buying your own quality camera.
If you are a service-based business you may want to invest in styled stock photography so that you can have high-quality images, even if you don’t have anything physical to sell.
2. Be Relentless With Your Hashtag Usage and Management
Your Hashtags are your best friend when it comes to achieving organic reach on your Instagram account.
However, they can also be your worst enemy:
- If you accidentally start using shadow banned Hashtags.
- If you repeatedly use the same hashtags in each post.
In these cases, they start to lose their effectiveness. Switch up between posts and change them overall every 3-6 months.
What I recommend is keeping 3-4 separate hashtag lists (30 Hashtags in each set) so that you can switch between them over the course of a month to ensure you are never overusing one set over the other.
You can create lists based on your different imagery content, for example, Skincare, Travel, Yoga, Beauty and it’s important that the content you share relates to the hashtags you pair with them.
Too often I see skincare brands using their same skincare hashtags when they share a cute dog photo or a travel inspiration photo – and this is just a waste!
3. Be Social on This Social Media Platform
Do you want your community to keep coming back to your content so that you keep appearing in their feed? For this, you need to engage with them and build relationships.
Essentially – you need to socialize.
Respond to your comments thoughtfully and in a timely manner. Also, go through your follower list or the list of people that have liked your last post. Check out their profile and show them some support.
Relationship building is key to developing the know-like-trust factor that is the catalyst to driving sales via social media.
4. Use Instagram Stories to Keep Your Audience Entertained
This in-the-moment feature allows you to share additional content without spamming (excessive posts) the timeline of your followers.
So why not use Instagram Stories to keep your audience entertained on the days or times that you are not posting anything new to your feed?
On Instagram Stories, you can share videos, Boomerangs, LIVE videos and photos. There are also plenty of fun filters, stickers, and face filters that you can add to up the visual appeal. And the latest feature allows you to share your Instagram Stories on your profile page with the new ‘Highlight’ feature.
You can make it even better, and more effective in gaining new followers. To do so, I recommend using a few Hashtags in your Instagram Stories. Also, use the Location sticker to tag your suburb or a local business you’re at.
If your Instagram Story gains enough popularity, it may end up on the Explore tab!
Extra discoverability? Who is going to say no to that?
